Consumer
psychology is pretty broad field. It covers everything from consumers’
purchasing behaviour, their thought processes and rationalizations to their
motivations and buying decisions. In this blog post, we’ll be looking at how
you can use consumer psychology to understand the consumer and deal with them
appropriately.
Cover All Angles in Your Sales Pitch
If you’re making
a sales pitch, you had better make sure that all angles are completely covered
in your sales pitch. Otherwise, you’ll likely lose your audience or prospects.
An effective sales pitch and one that is likely to convert big time is one that
answers all your prospects’ questions.
Consumers are
generally curious and always want to
know what’s in it for them. Bottom
line, if they cannot see any benefits from using or purchasing your products,
they’ll simply buy from your competition.
Study their Temperaments
Most consumers
have different temperaments. This actually supports the first point. Consumers’
temperaments play a key role in whether they’ll buy from you or not. Learn
everything you can about the 4 types of temperaments –sanguine, choleric,
melancholic and phlegmatic- and cover all the bases. Most importantly, learn to
spot the various temperaments. It’ll make your job easier when selling.
Watch For Subtle Body Language
Body language is
important when dealing with different customers. Learn to spot when a consumer
is interested, confused, will buy, has made up his kind to buy, needs a nudge,
among so many other things. Customers often unconsciously project certain body
languages. When you know how to read those body languages, you’ll be able to
meet your customers’ needs more and keep them satisfied.
Know when to Close the Sale
Selling isn’t
just about making your pitch. It’s knowing when to quit selling and let the
consumer sell himself or herself on the idea. Great consumer behaviourists and
salesmen know this. So they do a fantastic job of selling ten benefits of a product
–not its features- and allow the prospects make their decisions.
Consumer
psychology is great if you want to understand your clients and customers. Learn
everything you can about it and apply its principles. Your business will
benefit tremendously.
